Yeah, a PSA to all pet owners:
Cats fall into a category of animals known as “true” or “obligate” carnivores. This means that they will become ill and die if they are not fed meat. They are not omnivores like us, and while they can have their diet supplemented with other foods, meat needs to be their staple food.
Dogs are not obligate carnivores, so they can be fed a vegetarian diet, but you have to be careful about it and make sure they get all the nutrients they need. For example, they need to get protein-rich veggies like beans and corn. Do your research before trying to get a dog to eat vegetarian or vegan. But cats can NOT be fed a vegetarian or vegan diet!
I went on the PETA website (because it’s the first search result that comes up if you search “can dogs eat vegetarian”) and it will tell you that it’s possible to feed a cat a vegan diet. THIS IS BEYOND NOT THE CASE, AND I AM GOING TO WRITE THEM A STERNLY-WORDED LETTER ABOUT THEIR CIRCULATION OF MISINFORMATION.
Anyway. Do your research before you attempt to alter the diet of any pet. And for the love of god, DO NOT TRUST PETA. FOR ANYTHING.
This is a lifelong vegetarian telling you that cats cannot live on a vegetarian diet. It sucks, I know, but until the day where cloned meat becomes widely available you do have to make the choice between owning a cat and not buying meat for it. If you’re not comfortable feeding a cat meat, don’t get one.
